Handmade Incense Smokers from the Ore Mountains
“When the incense candle glows quietly and wisps of smoke drift from the mouth of the little figure, peace and contemplation return.”
This saying from the Ore Mountains captures the magic of the traditional incense smoker—a cherished piece of German folk art.
A Craft Rooted in History
When mining declined in the 18th century, the people of the Ore Mountains turned to wood carving. This shift gave birth to the rich tradition of Erzgebirge folk art. Over time, many family-run workshops emerged, producing everything from wooden toys to incense smokers.
By the 1830s, the first true incense smoker—known as the “pipe smoker”—made its appearance. That same iconic design can still be found today, lovingly handmade from local hardwoods like birch, maple, and beech.
More Than Just Decoration
Known as Raachermannl or Räuchermännchen, these incense smokers are symbols of tradition and pride in German craftsmanship. They represent both historical figures—like miners and bakers—and imaginative characters such as snowmen, gnomes, and even dragons.
Whether you’re looking for a beautiful Christmas decoration, a meaningful gift, or a collectible heirloom, these incense smokers stand for authenticity, artistry, and heart.
Tradition Meets Craftsmanship
Our handmade incense smokers come in a variety of designs, from timeless traditional figures to modern, whimsical styles—all inspired by the cultural heritage of the Ore Mountains and crafted with care in Germany.
Originally created as functional covers for burning incense cones, these figures have evolved into intricate works of art. They now depict everyday characters, professions, and festive scenes, bringing warmth and charm to homes year-round. With their soothing scents and enchanting designs, they’re more than decoration—they’re part of a treasured tradition.
How Does an Incense Smoker Work?
Each incense smoker consists of two wooden parts. The lower half holds a lit incense cone, while the upper hollowed-out figure is placed on top. As the incense burns, the smoke gently escapes through the figure’s mouth, bringing the charming character to life.

📐 Choosing the Right Incense Cone Size
Always use a sufficiently large incense burner for each incense cone size! For our mini cones (XS), incense smokers smaller than 12 cm* are suitable. For size M cones, we recommend incense figures with a minimum size of 13 cm*. The large cones in sizes XL and XXL should only be used in appropriately large incense figures or specially designed burners.
*This refers to the interior space of the figure where the incense cone burns. Legs or a base underneath do not count toward this measurement.
General Rule:
If the packaging of your incense smoker (whether made of metal, wood, or ceramic) does not specifically state a cone size, only use the standard size M.
🛖 What is the best way to store incense?
Store incense in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, to preserve its fragrance and quality.
